Food labeling: complex regulations
Food and beverages products labeling is subject to complex legislation which differs from one country to another. For instance, in the US, companies must comply with the Nutritional Facts Label established by the FDA, whereas in Europe, they need to follow European Regulation 1169/2011. It is challenging for manufacturers and retailers to constantly stay up-to-date with these regulations and ensure that their product labels are regulatory-compliant at any time. Legal aspects are continually evolving, and food labels which do not comply with current legislation can be both costly and damaging for a company and its brand image. Food label compliance is a constant challenge for food and beverage companies.
Create compliant food labels
The Aptean PLM Lascom Edition labeling tool will automatically generate ingredient statements, allergens statements, and labels to comply with any country’s regulations, taking the formulation result as its starting point. For instance, generating a Nutritional Facts Panel (USA), or an EU-compliant label is a simple matter. This drastically reduces the risk of human error (re-entry or overwriting of data, forgetting the recipient, etc.) and frees teams from these laborious tasks of little added value.
the tip of the iceberg
Indeed, in addition to regulations, many other factors must be taken into account and managed, such as retrieving data from suppliers (e.g. list of ingredients, raw materials, nutritional values, etc.), managing the various languages displayed on the packaging, and completing regulatory filings and certificates before launching a product. Moreover, having a large product portfolio and/or renewing several products on a regular basis adds a further layer of complexity to these challenges. Another hurdle when companies are selling their products in different countries is the need to translate every label. Not only is it time-consuming to translate every item correctly (e.g. ingredients, values, etc.) in all required languages, but the translation must meet the regulations in force, especially regarding any health claims displayed on packaging.
But food labels also have advantages; businesses can use them as advertising to make their products more attractive to consumers by using appealing claims or information.
Automate labeling with our Food labeling software
Aptean PLM Lascom Edition is the ideal solution to ensure label compliance. It enables you to centralize and structure specifications and product information in a consistent manner. Additionally, it ensures that the flow of information is always accurate and automatically updated within the solution, from raw materials information submitted by suppliers to the generation of product labels.
Depending on its configuration, Aptean PLM Lascom Edition will automatically generate ingredients and allergens statements in several languages, for example: French, English, Italian, etc.
Our labeling module automatically calculates and generates the nutritional value of a product. The software calculates those values based on the nutritional value of each ingredient used and the processing applied as part of the recipe. If needed, access to the CIQUAL and USDA tables through the Aptean PLM Lascom Edition solution is entirely possible. Consequently, the ingredients included in the recipe may be generic from the USDA/CIQUAL tables or any other ingredients purchased, with their own nutritional characteristics.
